Gentek Building Products is a manufacturer of aluminum siding for residential and commercial use. Before installation of their shop floor data collection system, Gentek's physical inventory process required a complete plant shutdown lasting 4 days. Over 100 employees were required to count and key in inventory data. The volume of data to be entered, and the number of people required, led to frequent data entry errors. The inaccuracies of the existing process led Gentek to pursue a bar coded data entry solution.
Gentek chose Quest Integrated Solutions to implement the physical inventory transactions on Gentek's corporate AS/400 system. Employees can scan bar coded aluminum coils and finished goods with wands attached to IBM 7527 data collection terminals. Using bar coded data entry avoids keying errors by scanning the data in one action. The data is sent over a Norand RF network to a PC which feeds the inventory transactions to the AS/400.
As a result of using the solution provided by Quest Integrated Solutions, keying errors have been eliminated, providing Gentek with accurate inventory records. The system has produced considerable savings in time and labor, with physical inventory now taking only 1½ days with one quarter of the personnel originally needed. This 90% reduction in the resources required would not have been possible without the process automation that Quest solutions provide.
