ITW Anchor manufactures bolts and fasteners for use in automobiles. In the interests of efficiency, ITW Anchor outsourcers certain manufacturing processes to other vendors. Each lot of fasteners must be split into hoppers, tagged with a packing slip, and shipped to one or more outsourcing vendors. From day to day, ITW management needs to know how many hoppers of a certain part are at outside processing, and when those parts are expected to return. These questions were difficult to answer under ITW's old paper-based outsourcing filing system, for each packing slip would have to be located in the files and counted.
ITW Anchor replaced its paper-based outsourcing tracking system with an automated system developed by Quest Integrated Solutions. The new system generates bar-coded packing slips for each outgoing hopper and generates a list of vendors to which the hopper is to be sent. The part number and packing slip number are bar coded for easy entry into the system. When a hopper moves from vendor to vendor, or is returned to Anchor, the packing slip number is scanned and the tracking records for the hopper are updated in the system. ITW Anchor management can now easily find out how many hoppers of a certain part are at outside processing with the aid of custom reports which can be printed from the system.
ITW Anchor's outsourcing tracking system was implemented on a IBM PC 350 Server running Windows NT and IBM DB/2 Universal Database for Windows NT, and can support many Windows 95/98/NT clients. The Windows-based data entry system is bar code enabled and interfaces to a Symbol Nomad RF scanner for easy data entry. Management reports can be filtered and customized for ranges of dates, packing slips, parts and a host of other parameters.
