Parker Hannifin Corporation,
   Hydraulic Pump & Motor Division,
   Otsego, MI

Parker Hannifin's Hydraulic Pump & Motor Division in Otsego, Michigan, employs both a time and labor solution and a real-time RF solution designed by Quest Integrated Solutions to increase the effectiveness and accountability of employees on the shop floor. Prior to the installation of the time and labor system, employees were required to keep written records of the jobs they had worked on during their shift, and key those records into a 3270 terminal at shift end. The division wished to increase its productivity by reducing the amount of time each employee required for bookkeeping.

Quest Integrated Solutions implemented a network of IBM 7526 data collection terminals positioned at strategic locations in the plant. As each job is completed, employees scan their badges and job packets into the terminals. The data is sent to a server which passes it along to Parker's corporate ERP system. Employees can switch from one job to another in a matter of seconds while barely interrupting their work flow. The speed and accuracy of scanning reduces the time needed for job accounting, and eliminates typographical errors as job information no longer needs to be entered by hand. As every job transaction goes to the ERP system with an employee badge number attached, accountability is not a problem at the Hydraulic Pump & Motor Division.

The division called upon Quest Integrated Solutions again to extend its data collection system to include interactive, real time RF data collection. Using Norand 1700 hand held RF units and forklift-mounted Norand 5900 terminals, users can move throughout the plant updating the corporate ERP system with part transfer, physical inventory transactions, and inventory adjustments. Each mobile terminal communcates over its own private mainframe connection through Norand 6710 access points located across the plant. These dedicated connections allow users to perform inquiries and updates in an interactive fashion with immediate feedback from the mainframe and no interference from other users. In essence, each user has a portable mainframe terminal which has been reduced to fit in the palm of his hand so he may carry it wherever the work has to be done—no more "returning to base" in order to answer a simple query!
